Episode 14 - Tools of the knife making trade

Alrighty folks, here’s a list and some links to some of the tools that i use to make knives and that I discuss in episode 14 fo the SLL podcast.

Knife Making Specific Tools

  • Belt Grinder - I recommend the Black Fox One

  • Disc Grinder - Motor and VFD sourced locally and the disc was purchased from knifemaker.ca however I do not believe they carry them anymore.

  • Checkering file - Find it here

  • My sanding Blocks. You can find them on sale here

  • Heat Treating Oven - check out Paragon or Even Heat.

  • Knife Vice - here is the video of me making mine.

  • Sanding Clamp - Made with a toggle Clamp.

  • Aluminum Plate Vise - made with a wood worker’s vise

  • Fixed Angle Sharpener - Either the TSPROF or the Wicked Edge are what I like

  • Kydex Press. I got my foam from here.

General Tools

Consumables

  • Abrasives - Belts, sheets and rolls (emery cloth)

  • Epoxy

  • Masking Tape (buy the good stuff)

  • Popsicle sticks (great for mixing epoxy and holding WA style handles while the finish is drying.

  • Paper Towels

  • Windex (with ammonia)

  • WD-40

  • Fluid Film

  • Boos Block Oil

  • Layout dye

  • Ferric Chloride w/ Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Nitrile Gloves

  • Telephone books (for checking edge consistency
